(San Diego, CA): As more than 1,000 anti-choice activists from around the country arrive in San Diego for the annual Care Net conference, NARAL Pro-Choice California is giving them a taste of their own medicine.

NARAL teamed up with comedian Melinda Taub on an ad featuring a “tourist guide” filled with the kind of unreliable information women receive when visiting Care Net’s crisis pregnancy centers.

“We’re glad you’re here for your conference on running so-called ‘crisis pregnancy centers’ (CPC). Because every second Care Net’s members spend at the conference is a second you’re not: building websites that trick pregnant women into visiting a CPC instead of a doctor; lying to your clients that abortion causes breast cancer; mistaking an IUD for a fetus on an ultrasound; doing everything you can to deceive, harass, and shame women who come to you for help,” begins the ad, which ran in today’s San Diego Union Tribune and San Diego State University’s Daily Aztec.

Care Net is an umbrella organization claiming more than 1,100 “crisis pregnancy centers” (CPCs) around the country. According to Care Net, this conference is the nation’s largest yearly gathering of CPC leaders. CPCs lure women in with false advertising implying they offer comprehensive reproductive health care services, then lie to and manipulate women to keep them from accessing abortion care. There are more than 170 CPCs across the state of California; Care Net’s website claims 98 affiliated centers in the state.

NARAL Pro-Choice California released the findings from an undercover investigation of CPCs in March of this year. They found that 91% of centers visited falsely linked abortion with breast cancer, infertility, mental health problems, and even death. A Care Net-affiliated center told a NARAL investigator that her IUD showing up on an ultrasound was her “baby.” The investigation findings are available at www.cpclies.com.

“Crisis pregnancy centers operate with impunity because too many people are unaware of their deceptive practices,” said Amy Everitt, state director of NARAL Pro-Choice California. “We’re shining a spotlight on the fact that anti-choice activists are descending on San Diego to be trained on how to manipulate women and interfere with their reproductive health choices. Care Net and other CPCs put their ideological agenda first, endangering women’s health. We’re not going to sit back quietly while they bring these shameful tactics to our state.”

We’d like to welcome you to this wonderful city with a tourist guide! Much like you, it is filled with lies.

BEACH!

No woman should ever be tricked into keeping a pregnancy she doesn’t want. And no one should leave San Diego without checking out its beautiful beaches! This may look like an abandoned taco restaurant, but trust us. It is a beautiful beach. Just check out our website, BeautifulBeachNotATacoRestaurant.com.

COMIC-CON!

Ah, Comic-Con, now only San Diego’s second creepiest convention since you arrived. Like Care Net, Comic-Con is a bunch of weirdos walking around dressed up like doctors and scientists. Maybe you’ll even meet Captain America! You might hit it off – you’ve both obviously been frozen in time since 1945. Comic-Con is conveniently located in the longest line at the DMV. Really! That’s where Comic-Con is! Take a number and you’ll meet Iron Man! Their computers are down, have fun!

HELP!

Care Net members, you’re far from home. You might be unsure where to turn in an emergency. There are 7 hospitals, 4 reproductive health clinics, 5 fire stations and 2 police stations near your hotel. These are all 100% real. Because we would never lie to someone who badly needed our help.

You get what we’re doing with this, right?

Love,

NARAL Pro-Choice California Foundation
