At the conclusion of tonight’s Senate debate in Stockton, pro-choice leaders praised California Attorney General Kamala Harris as the champion we need to fight for reproductive freedom. NARAL has endorsed State Attorney General Kamala Harris in what is the first open Senate race in California in more than two decades
“Tonight, Kamala Harris proved why she is a champion for us all,” said Ilyse Hogue, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America. “Kamala has always led the fight to defend and expand access to safe and legal abortion care and as Attorney General she has pushed back against efforts to undermine Californians’ right to accurate health information. She also uniquely understands that our economic prospects and our ability to plan our future is intrinsically tied to our ability to determine when and how we grow our families. With our reproductive freedom under unprecedented attack, Kamala Harris is the champion we need fighting for us in the US Senate.”
“There was one clear champion for California women and families on the debate stage tonight,” said Amy Everitt, state director of NARAL Pro-Choice California. “Kamala Harris declared her unequivocal support for a woman’s right to choose and made it clear that economic security includes affordable childcare and paid family leave. She has a proven and powerful record of fighting for dignity and respect for all Californians. She is the leader we need in DC.”
California Attorney General Kamala Harris has been an unflinching supporter of reproductive freedom her entire career. As a newly-elected district attorney, she helped spearhead the opposition to the parental notification ballot initiative as the Bay Area Regional Chair for the No on 73 campaign. For her leadership defending reproductive rights, she was awarded the Champion of Choice Award by NARAL Pro-Choice California. As attorney general, she has worked to uphold standards of care for abortion services when hospitals undergo mergers. She joined NARAL Pro-Choice California as a sponsor of the Reproductive FACT Act, the nation’s first statewide law taking on the manipulative tactics of anti-choice crisis pregnancy centers. When she was elected attorney general, Harris made history as the first woman, first African American, and first Asian American to serve as California’s top law-enforcement official.
NARAL Pro-Choice America and its network of state affiliates are dedicated to protecting and expanding reproductive freedom for all Americans. NARAL works to guarantee every that woman has the right to make personal decisions regarding the full range of reproductive choices, including preventing unintended pregnancy, bearing healthy children, and choosing legal abortion. In recognition of its work defending our constitutional right to choose, Fortune Magazine described NARAL as “one of the top 10 advocacy groups in America.”
