In response to Republicans in the House of Representatives passing a 20-week ban on abortion with support from every California Republican House member, Amy Everitt, NARAL Pro-Choice California State Director, released the following statement:
“Of all the things Republican leaders should be focusing on, including tragedies in Las Vegas and Puerto Rico, they have instead decided to make attacking women’s rights their top priority. Despite the many pressing concerns around our country, out of touch politicians are playing politics with the lives and wellbeing of women across the country. Unfortunately, these Republicans sold out California women and voted to take away our most basic rights. Women and families in these difficult situations deserve safe and comprehensive care, not one-size-fits-all judgments from anti-choice politicians. Abortions after twenty weeks of pregnancy are incredibly rare and often medically complex. These politicians have no business deciding if, when, and how California women should start and grow their family. NARAL Pro-Choice California will continue working to advance the reproductive freedom of women all across our state, and will hold accountable politicians who undermine our constitutionally protected right to access basic reproductive healthcare.”
HR 36 would ban abortion nationwide at 20 weeks of pregnancy and was supported by every Republican in the California congressional delegation, including House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (CA-23) and the 7 vulnerable Republicans whose districts went Democratic in the 2016 presidential election: Reps. Jeff Denham (CA-10), David Valadao (CA-21), Rep. Steve Knight (CA-25), Rep. Ed Royce (CA-39), Rep. Mimi Walters (CA-45) Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (CA-48), Rep. Darrell Issa (CA-49).
