San Francisco – Two weeks after Election Day, the results are finally in and Californians have sent a resounding message to the rest of the country. In a sweeping referendum on the Trump administration’s anti-women, anti-immigrant, anti-LGBTQ agenda, Californians stepped up to make clear that we stand united against hate and that we will fight for the values that California represents: equality, diversity, and justice.

Claiming wins by flipping key Congressional seats, including NARAL endorsed candidates Katie Hill (CA 25), Gil Cisneros (CA 39), Katie Porter (CA 45), Harley Rouda (CA 48), and Mike Levin (CA 49) — winning critical statewide races, including NARAL endorsed candidates Gavin Newsom for Governor, Eleni Kounalakis for Lieutenant Governor, Ricardo Lara for California Insurance Commissioner, and Tony Thurmond for Superintendent of Public Instruction — and unseating anti-choice incumbents in State Legislative districts to reclaim a pro-choice super majority in the California Legislature, including NARAL endorsed candidates Anna Caballero (SD 12), Rebecca Bauer-Kahan (AD 16), Christy Smith (AD 38), and Cottie Petrie-Norris (AD 74) — Californians again demonstrated why we stand as a beacon of progress.

“Trump’s assault on reproductive freedom backfired on him and his out-of-touch allies in Congress as pro-choice Californians flipped a total of six seats to help send a pro-choice wave to Congress and up and down the California ballot,” said Amy Everitt, State Director of NARAL Pro-Choice California. NARAL Pro-Choice California has been proud to play a significant role in these races, hosting phonebanks and textbanks, knocking doors, turning out the vote, and mobilizing our members. These victories are monumental wins for Californians, ushering in a new era of progress here at home.”

NARAL Pro-Choice America and its network of state affiliates are dedicated to protecting and expanding reproductive freedom for all Americans. NARAL works to guarantee that every woman has the right to make personal decisions regarding the full range of reproductive choices, including preventing unintended pregnancy, bearing healthy children, and choosing legal abortion. In recognition of its work defending our constitutional right to choose, Fortune Magazine described NARAL as “one of the top 10 advocacy groups in America.
