SAN FRANCISCO — Today, after sixteen years as Director of NARAL Pro-Choice California, Amy Everitt announced that she is passing the baton to Shannon Hovis, who has been the Assistant Director since July 2018.

“NARAL Pro-Choice California has a long history of legislative and electoral victories that have improved the lives of women and families across this state, and I am proud to have been at the helm of this movement for the past 16 years,” said Everitt. “Shannon has been a critical part of our team and I know under her leadership, NARAL is in good hands. I’m excited to continue moving this organization forward in a new capacity.”

Since joining NARAL in 2018, Hovis has overseen California’s electoral program, helping secure electoral victories across the state for NARAL-endorsed candidates, led NARAL’s legislative program – including sponsoring SB 24 to expand abortion access at public universities and SB 464 to address California’s high rates of black maternal mortality – and launched action councils across California to drive NARAL’s work locally. In her first initiative with NARAL, she led California’s resistance to stop Kavanaugh’s confirmation and organized “Unite for Justice Bay Area” as part of the largest single-day protest against a Supreme Court nominee. Previously Hovis worked at the California Department of Justice in the Civil Rights section and as Senior Policy Advisor to then-Attorney General Kamala Harris, in the California State Assembly, and in the Sacramento Mayor’s office.

“Amy Everitt has been a force for the reproductive rights movement in California, and I am deeply honored to continue building upon her legacy to usher NARAL Pro-Choice California into its next chapter,” said Hovis. “While California has much to celebrate, inequities in access and quality reproductive healthcare continue to abound. I have spent my career fighting for civil and human rights, and I’m ready to work with our allies and members to lead the way to ensure that reproductive freedom is a reality for every Californian.”

Under Everitt’s leadership, California has been a pro-choice pioneer, defeating extreme anti-choice measures, electing pro-choice majorities to both chambers of the state legislatures, passing groundbreaking legislation like the Duty to Dispense Act and the Reproductive FACT Act, and growing NARAL’s membership to over 200,000 strong. Everitt will remain at NARAL Pro-Choice America as the Vice President of Special Projects focusing on corporate engagement.

NARAL Pro-Choice America and its network of state affiliates and chapters are dedicated to protecting and expanding reproductive freedom for all. For more than 50 years, NARAL has worked to guarantee that every woman has the right to make personal decisions regarding the full range of reproductive choices, including preventing unintended pregnancy, bearing healthy children, and choosing legal abortion. Since 1969, NARAL has made history, grown to over 2 million members, and met the moments that have defined this fight with action, power and freedom.  In recognition of its work defending our constitutional right to choose, Fortune Magazine described NARAL as “one of the top 10 advocacy groups in America.”
