Yesterday, NARAL Pro-Choice America Vice President Amy Everitt testified before the California State Assembly Judiciary Committee in support of ACR 110, a resolution introduced by California State Assemblywoman Buffy Wicks to declare California a reproductive freedom state for all. Assemblywoman Wicks also shared her abortion story as part of the testimony for this resolution.
This resolution is an important signal in the face of attacks across the country on reproductive freedom, as thirty other states introduced, passed, or signed into law extreme bans on abortion this year alone.
ACR 110 points out how vital it is to protect reproductive freedom and commits the state to protect the constitutional right to access abortion. While other states from Ohio to Alabama have passed draconian legislation to outlaw or restrict abortion this year, California elected officials are standing with women and families to protect reproductive freedom.
“Women and their families need the freedom to make the best decisions for their circumstances—they don’t deserve to pay the price for a political agenda,” said Everitt. “The resolution to declare California a reproductive freedom state for all is an important next step in California’s long legacy of protecting and expanding the right to choose. Today the state of California reaffirmed this commitment—leading California into the future instead of back in time like so many other states.”
NARAL Pro-Choice America and NARAL Pro-Choice California have been working to ensure that reproductive freedom remains intact in California despite efforts by anti-choice politicians to challenge Roe v. Wade and criminalize abortion nationwide. ACR 110 represents the values of California and reflects the more than 7 in 10 Americans who support the right to safe and legal abortion and want to ensure that women can make these most personal decisions with those whom they trust, free from interference from politicians.
