For Immediate Release: December 10, 2019

NARAL Pro-Choice California today announced its endorsement of California Assemblymember David Chiu (CA-17) in his bid for re-election in advance of a NARAL-sponsored fundraiser for Chiu on Wednesday. Asm. Chiu has been an outspoken champion for reproductive freedom during his tenure in the California Assembly, authoring and co-authoring bills to expand and protect abortion access.

“We are proud to stand behind Assemblymember David Chiu, who has shown up time and again for women and families in California,” said NARAL Pro-Choice California Director Shannon Hovis. “As extreme anti-choice legislators in states across the country continue to push their deeply unpopular agenda of banning abortion and punishing women, we need the leadership of champions for reproductive freedom like David Chiu now more than ever. Not only does Assemblymember Chiu consistently vote in line with his values, he goes above and beyond to advance legislation to ensure that all Californians can make their own decisions about pregnancy with those they love and trust.”

In 2015, in Asm. Chiu’s first year in the State Assembly, he authored NARAL-sponsored AB 775 — the Reproductive FACT (Freedom, Accountability, Comprehensive Care, and Transparency) Act — to ensure that all California women receive medically accurate, unbiased information about their reproductive health options. The Reproductive FACT Act was a first-in-the-country state law requiring facilities that provide pregnancy-related care to distribute a notice of reproductive health rights and mandating that unlicensed facilities disclose their status. Asm. Chiu worked with NARAL and the California Attorney General to defend the Reproductive FACT Act all the way up to the United States Supreme Court.

In 2019, Asm. Chiu authored NARAL-supported AB 1524 to increase access to primary care and preventive health services for children and young adults by creating a fast-tracked enrollment process for qualified clinics, allowing student health centers that choose to participate in the Medi-Cal and Family PACT programs to have their enrollments processed in about 30 days.
