Alena Chavez joins NARAL Pro-Choice California as the Social Media Intern in 2019. At NARAL, she handles all social media platforms and assists Allie Lahey, the Senior Organizing Manager, with other local events in San Francisco.
Alena is from a small town in the Central Valley- Visalia, California, and this is where her love for loud, intersectional and inclusive activism bloomed. While in high-school, she volunteered for a local community health center that provides health care services to low-income communities throughout the Valley. Now, she attends San Francisco State University, and is pursuing a Masters degree in Philosophy and a double minor in Political Science and Ethnic Studies. She is an active member on campus, engaging with multiple social justice clubs and her favorite- the Philosophy Club!
Before NARAL Pro-Choice California, Alena was an intern at Bay Rising, a grassroots organization based in Oakland, CA, collecting over 150 signatures for multiple progressive measures on the 2018 California Ballot. Before that, she was an intern at California Rural Legal Assistance, a non profit located in Fresno, CA, and put on a health care clinic for the local farmworker community.
While she’s not advocating for reproductive rights, Alena volunteers at Unite Here, the organization that mobilized the union strikes against Marriott Hotels.
